A must-try dish when in Osaka is the Kushikatsu skewers. This dish originated in Shinsekai. It comes in different variations from meat, seafood and vegetables which are battered in panko breadcrumb and deep fried.

There are numerous Kushikatsu restaurants in Shinsekai, but the most famous is Kushikatsu Daruma. With several branches scattered across the city, it is easy to spot one. Just look for the angry man holding 2 skewers in an X position.

The one we’ve tried is their original store, located in an alley with the angry man displayed in the 2nd floor window.

Inside, the restaurant features an open kitchen. With a small floor area, there are only 12 counter seats available. You’ll likely find yourself seated elbow to elbow with fellow diners. I think this branch have kept its traditional vibe which adds to the experience.

Since this was our first time trying, the crew recommended to order the Kushikatsu combo. They offer 3 different combinations to choose from, we sampled combo B and C.

The Kushikatsu skewers was served in a small tray.

Both combo includes Doteyaki, a beef tendon soup served in a small cup. The tendon which melts in your mouth and a thick and flavorful soup, is a great dish to partner with the deep fried Kushikatsu skewers.

During the Japan trip, my goal was to try as many local alcohol as I can. In this instance, I ordered the cold sake to complement the dish. They served the Namachozo Sake, which comes in a small bottle.

We also sampled their Oolong Tea. However, we were unaware that they only serve it cold. But the crew of Kushikatsu Daruma were accommodating enough that they improvised to fulfill our request.

Trying out Kushikatsu skewers in Daruma’s original branch was a memorable experience.

Recommendation: There are plenty of Daruma branches in the area, best to visit the original branch.

Tip: Kushikatsu is best partnered with sake or beer.
